The invention relates to the use of nucleotide sequences corresponding to the sliver gene, also known as the SI gene, and to the different allelic forms thereof, or corresponding to fragments of the gene and of the different allelic forms of same, in order to perform a method for the identification of different populations or races of ruminant mammals, such as cattle, sheep or goats.
