Abstract
A process for preparing an olefin polymer grafted poly(vinyl alcohol) polymer, in which an olefin polymer is first treated with a free radical polymerization initiator, a peroxidized olefin polymer material, or ionizing radiation, then grafted with a vinyl ester monomer to form an olefin polymer grafted poly(vinyl ester) polymer, and finally the vinyl ester moieties in the resulting grafted polymer are converted to vinyl alcohol moieties, at a temperature of from 25 to less than 100.degree. C., in a mixed aromatic hydrocarbon/alkanol solvent system. The resulting olefin polymer grafted poly(vinyl alcohol) polymer has improved oxygen barrier properties.
