The present invention is related to compositions for the induction of apoptosis containing phytosphingosine derivatives as effective components. The present invention is related to compositions for the induction of apoptosis containing Vit D.sub.3 or calcipotriol as an effective component in addition to phytosphingosine derivatives. The compositions of the present invention include pharmaceutical compositions or cosmetic compositions having an activity to induce apoptosis. The present invention offers a method of prevention or treatment of various skin diseases, various tumors, various cancers, etc. that may be prevented or cured by the induction of the activity of apoptosis in living bodies, which is comprised of the steps of administration of compositions for the induction of apoptosis containing phytosphingosine derivatives as effective components and irradiation of UVB to psoriatic lesions. Therefore, the compositions of the present invention are useful for the prevention or treatment of various skin diseases, various tumors, various cancers, etc. that may be prevented or cured by the induction of the activity of apoptosis in living bodies.
