Startup of autothermal reformers for hydrogen production in simplified by providing a first, ATR catalyst bed (14) containing a low-temperature-lightoff catalyst and a second catalyst in a second bed (16), or in a second part of the first bed (14), which is a better steam reforming catalyst. The combination is an effective solution for the startup needs of small or mobile steam reformers.
