A coated electrode for welding stainless steels. The electrode when used for welding, produces a low level of fumes, which in turn contains a low level of hexavalent chromium. The electrode has a central metallic core which is made of steel or stainless steel and which is covered with a covering that contains a lithium based compound. The covering does not contain any sodium or potassium based compounds like aluminosilicates. The covering also contains a lithium containing binder and metallic elements in the form of ferro-alloys or individual metallic elements.
