Abstract

Extracts of Lycium barbarum serve as a neuroprotective agent against .beta.-amyloid peptide neurotoxicity which thus permits their use for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and for the prevention of neuronal loss in aging against the accumulation of .beta.-amyloid peptide in the brain. Stress kinases (c-Jun N-terminal kinase and double-stranded RNA-dependent protein kinase) are used as a technological platform for screening neuroprotective drugs.
