'The invention pertains to a device and a method for establishing a communication link to cards with different usage functions, where the device includes at least two control units, which are suitable for different card usage functions, a reading unit, which is suitable for the different card usage functions, and a multiplexer that is linked to the reading unit for communication purposes and by means of which the communication link can be established to the control unit that is suitable for the card usage function in question.'
