Abstract

Carbon disulfide and hydrogen are reacted in the presence of a catalyst to form methyl mercaptans. The catalyst may be V.sub.2O.sub.5, Re.sub.2O.sub.7, or MnO supported on a substrate of CeO.sub.2, ZrO.sub.2, TiO.sub.2, Nb.sub.2O.sub.5, Al.sub.2O.sub.3, SiO.sub.2, Ta.sub.2O.sub.5, SnO.sub.2, or mixtures thereof High conversions of carbon disulfide and high selectivities to methanethiol are obtained by the present invention.
