Abstract

A compound or a salt or solvate thereof, of formula (I): 1 in which: R.sub.1 is hydrogen, alkenyl or alkyl; R.sub.2 is hydrogen or one or more alkyl groups; R.sub.5 is hydrogen or alkyl; R.sub.x is hydrogen or alkyl; or R.sub.x together with R.sub.3 represent a bond; when R.sub.x is hydrogen or alkyl, then R.sub.z is hydrogen or alkyl; and R.sub.3 is selected from hydrogen, optionally substituted alkyl, aryl, aryl-alkyl, cycloalkyl and heterocyclyl; or from hydrogen or an optionally substituted alkyl, aryl, aryl-alkyl, cycloalkyl or heterocyclic group linked to the piperidine ring via>C.dbd.O, --O--CO--, --O--CO--NH--, --CO--NH--, --NH--CO-- or >SO.sub.2; and R.sub.4 is selected from hydrogen, alkyl, --CN, --COR.sub.1 and --OR.sub.1 (where R.sub.1 is as defined above) or a --NR.sub.6R.sub.7 group, where R.sub.6 and R.sub.7 are selected independently from hydrogen and alkyl, or R.sub.6 is --COR.sub.8 where R.sub.8 is hydrogen, alkyl or optionally substituted aryl, aryl-alkyl, cycloalkyl or heterocyclyl; or R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 together form a spiro-cyclylalkyl, spiro-heterocyclyl or an unsaturated spiro-carbocyclyl group; when R.sub.x together with R.sub.3 represent a bond then: R.sub.4 is a group R.sub.4x and R.sub.z is a group R.sub.3x; wherein R.sub.3x and R.sub.4x are independently selected from hydrogen or optionally substituted alkyl, aryl, aryl-alkyl, cycloalkyl or heterocyclyl;
