An etalon is disclosed comprising a first material having a first coefficient of thermal optical path length change .mu..sub.1, a second material having a second coefficient of thermal optical path length change .mu..sub.2, and an optical path extending through the first material and the second material, wherein one of .mu..sub.1 and .mu..sub.2 is negative. Etalons composed of a single crystalline material are also disclosed. Such materials include crystalline quartz.
