The invention is directed to a zinc powder or zinc alloy powder for alkaline batteries, which powder has a grain size distribution wherein 60 to 100 wt.-% of the particles, relative to the zinc powder or zinc alloy powder, have a diameter of from 40 to 140 .mu.m. The invention is also directed to an alkaline battery.
