Abstract

The present invention provides a method for inactivating pathogens in a protein solution. The method includes adding to the protein solution either separately or together as a composition (a) a detergent; and (b) an ester of a di- or tri-carboxylic acid to make a preparation. The ester is generally present in the preparation in a concentration of from about 0.001 to about 2% (w/w). The detergent is typically present in a concentration of about 0.001 to about 2% (w/w). The preparation is incubated for a sufficient amount of time sufficient to inactivate the pathogens.
