Abstract
An impregnating pitch having a softening point of about 90.degree. C. and a flash point above about 280.degree. C. is prepared from a coal tar liquid. Preparation of the pitch involves sparging coal tar liquid with steam or an inert gas while maintaining the liquid at a temperature of from about 260.degree. C.-270.degree. C.
