A compound of the formula (1): 1 wherein --X.sup.1--X.sup.2-- is a group of the formula: --C(.dbd.O)--N(R.sup.7)-- or --C(R.sup.8).dbd.N-- (in which R.sup.7 is hydrogen, substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, etc.; and R.sup.8 is halogen, etc.); R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are independently hydrogen, substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, etc.; and R.sup.4 is substituted or unsubstituted alkylene, or a prodrug thereof, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt of the same, which exhibits an inhibitory activity of poly(ADP-ribose)polymerase (PARP) and is useful as remedies for diseases caused by the accelerated PARP activity such as brain ischemic disorders.
