A vertical magnetic recording medium and a method for evaluating the same by which the thickness of the micro-crystalline texture part occupying the ferromagnetic layer in the recording layer of the medium can be grasped quantitatively along with the distribution thereof in the thickness direction and the crystal magnetic anisotropy constant K.sub.u.sup.grain of magnetic crystal grains in a columnar texture part can be determined simultaneously. The vertical magnetic recording medium is characterized in that the ferromagnetic layer (12) where the columnar texture part (14) is located on the microcrystalline texture part (13) is the recording layer and the microscrystalline texture part comprises microcrystals having c-axes oriented at random three-dimensionally The method for evaluating the vertical magnetic recording medium is characterized in that the microcrystalline texture part (13) comprises microcrystals having c-axes oriented in random three-dimensionally and the crystal magnetic anisotropy constant K.sub.u.sup.grain of magnetic crystal grain at the columnar texture part and/or the thickness d.sup.ini at the microcrystalline texture part (13) can be determined from the vertical magnetic anisotropy constant K.sub.u.sup.-of the ferromagnetic layer (12) and the thickness d.sup.Mag of the ferromagnetic layer
