The invention refers to the use of a cubic liquid crystalline phase for determining the distribution of a chemical substance between a hydrophobic and a hydrophilic environment. The hydrophobic environment is represented by a bilayer of lipids in the cubic crystalline phase and the hydrophilic environment is represented by a hydrophilic phase in equilibrium with the cubic phase.
